It's great to see developers starting to recognise the added value of incorporate green and blue infrastructure into their new developments. Not only can wetlands / lakes, if managed properly help reduce flood risk and support vital biodiversity, they are add benefits to people's health and wellbeing.
It is just important to ensure there is a long term funding structure in place to manage and maintain these assets well into the future.
A number of our sites, adjacent to developments have lakes, ponds and wetlands, such as Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park in London, and we see time and time again how valued this haven is for people and wildlife within such an urban setting.
Most of us love the idea of living by water: it’s calming, offers a feeling of well-being and a sense of open space – particularly in the middle of cities. Developers are increasingly looking to incorporate lakes in their urban sites or to find waterside spots for their projects.
